Winning – Training – Engaging

WINNING

No, I am NOT Charlie Sheen.  I actually won a free entry into a 5K off of Active.com.  I have been trying for years and I finally won!  I won an entry to race in the  Wrucha’s 5K Run at Gasden Park.  The value was $30 and I was so excited.  The bad part it was on a Sunday morning in South, South, South Tampa.

Rob and I had to attend a church meeting that day so I knew I would not have time to drive to the race, go home and change and make it on time.  So, I decided to post the bib up on Run Tampa and it was gone in an instant.  Ever better it went to someone who is awesome and beautiful and a Run Tampa member and I did not even know it!  Her name is also Melissa – which is cool!!  Melissa was part of my Color Run team because she is friends with my friend Brandi.  Small world…

She made it to the race and finished and looked great doing it.  I looked for her time but it was not posted.  Maybe she will share with us… (hint, hint)  She also ran in a Jack Daniels hat which further increases my fondness for her.

Congrats on your Race!

TRAINING

I have finally started training with my new training plan!  This week I have been focusing on getting back into the groove.  Zumba and running and walking oh my!  I have been adding more veggies daily and have also been focusing on trying to get more sleep.  I usually stay up late doing homework  or reading and then fall asleep with a book on my face.  I need my ZZZZs.

Another thing I have been doing is putting lemons in my water.  After doing a little Pinterest research I am finding that lemon water is great for weight loss.  Pinterest is a reliable source right? Well either way here the stuff I have learned..

Lemons, specifically lemon juice,  is good for digestion, boosting your immune system through Vitamin C, possibly anticarcinogenic, high in potassium, antibacterial (which I am all about), antiseptic, and the list goes on!

It’s refreshing and its supposed to be very good for your liver.  It has detoxifying properties which I really need!  I found this “outfit” on Polyvore – cracks me up every time.Liver Hater

I plan to keep you posted on weight loss and the training as it comes along.  I am headed to Gasparilla for the 15K in late February so I am super nervous: my goals are to finish and beat my half pace of 16:36.  Both of which Mary is helping me do with the excellent training plan.  If you don’t know Mary find her inspirational, awesomeness here.

ENGAGING

Lastly Rob and I are working on a playlist for the DJ at the engagement party and it is tougher than you think.  I was trying to pick songs that are lovey dovey, familiar and fun. The list below is what I am starting with but editing is guaranteed.  The are in no particular order either.

No haters please but I certainly welcome your input!  If I am missing something please tell me and if you hate one keep that to yourself.  We have an eclectic family so we have to play all kinds of music.  I really need some new ones for the Island portion. I also think I will use the “Fun/Dance” songs for my next run playlist.  Without further ado…

Race Recap: The Color Run – St. Petersburg

Color Run Review!

On Saturday, December 15th a bunch of my friends and I got together to participate in The Color Run – St. Petersburg. It was a cold and foggy drive to St. Pete and when we left our car I was freezing but we were excited.  After trying to park the car in six different spots – this is a weird habit I have on race day – we were off!  Thank God for Target touchscreen gloves ($1.50 on Black Friday)!

Foggy and Cold

For those of you who don’t know, the Color Run is national race that promotes itself as the “Happiest 5K on the Planet!”  Every kilometer, you are dusted (or drenched) in colored dust: Pink, Blue, Orange, & Yellow.  The dust is colored cornstarch and smelled like flour so it’s not harmful.  The race route started at Vinoy Park in St. Petersburg, FL and wound down the Pier and through downtown.

I had assembled a pretty great team and we all met up before the race to take a group photo in our white clothes and party glasses/goggles.  Rob was a great sport being the only guy on a team called the “Color Cuties.” We look very clean here but that did not last long.

Before

The race had approximately 10,000 runners/walkers and I have to be honest the corral wait was brutal.  The race should have started at 9:00AM but we couldn’t get on the course until about 9:45.  Which is no fun…

Corral Madness

I think we were in the fourth or fifth wave (which was not organized by speed but rather on what time you arrived to the race).  By the time our wave was ready we were much happier.

Starting Line

Obviously, the best part of the race was the color dust but unfortunately the miles in between were a little weak.  They needed more cheering and music and overall fun I think.  The majority of the time you spend recovering from the color zones.  BUT, the color zones were really fun so it definitely made up for it.

Yellow zone was crazy!

At the end of the race at the finish line you are supposed to open the color packet they gave you in your race packet and get crazy which many people did.  That is why some people are more colorful than others. Also, the color packets were different colors than the course colors like teal and purple.

There was also a great stage with tons of music and every fifteen minutes they had a color explosion.  This was really awesome to see.  I got this picture from their Facebook wall since we had to leave earlier than we would have liked.  We got to see the countdown and explosion but we were not close enough to take this good of a picture. Color Boom!

Also, it was great to hear that part of the race funds went to the Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation.  JDRF is the leading global organization focused on type 1 diabetes (T1D) research and awareness.  This is a really great cause!  It is nice to know that a portion of our $50 registration fee will be used for some good. It was a fun time overall and I recommend it anyone who likes to smile a lot and get a little dirty once in a while.  The blue was the hardest to get out but it was not bad at all.  It was a great addition to the “Races” page even though we did not time ourselves.

Have you done the Color Run?  What did you think?

A Hard Day To Remember

National-Blogging-Day-of-Remembrance-1

My friends, there is not much to say except we all have to stick together when tragedy strikes.  Nothing I post today will compare to this story.   No recipe, run discussion or workout will seem right.   We should all focus on praying for those we lost and hope that talking about this will raise awareness about mental illness, security and hoping that those people who are suffering get help.  Never be afraid to ask for help.  There are people who care still left here.  ASK!!

Bloggers please share this National Blogger Remembrance Picture and please leave your comments and well wishes.  I am praying hard for all those families in true pain today.  My troubles seem so insignificant now.

Much Love To All,

Mel
