What You Thought This Was Going To Be Easy? Hmmm.

I think the reason why personal trainers are so expensive is because they make you work so hard.  Otherwise, why would you go?  You want to FEEL like your hard earned bucks are going to a good cause.  In my case the cause is my booty, tummy, arms, legs – whole body basically.  Although, I must admit my eyeballs are in really good shape – perfectly skinny. 🙂  Anyway, this was our second co-ed PT session and we both look like maniacs afterwards.  My hair looks like it had electricity running through it basically.    I NEED these:  Fly Away Tamer Headbands From Lululemon   I saw them on the blog Running with the Sunrise and now I  NEED them.   However, I need to go to the store and try them on, my skull is part of “the cause” too.

During training, I realized again how out of shape I am and that I hate crawling on and off machines.  I admire the ladies and gents who do it gracefully and quickly.  I feel like a newborn baby horse with too many legs and arms or something.

animals, foals, hoofs, horses, mammals, natureBUT, our trainer is really professional and very encouraging, so I think we are doing the right thing.  It is expensive for us both to do it concurrently,  so I may have to differ Rob to the PT solo.  He really likes it and is doing very good for a first time PT client.  We worked on all the overall body yesterday but with an emphasis on legs.  Legs are the best because they are such a huge muscle group the burn lots and lots of calories!  We did squats, lunges and tons of machines.  It was definitely a work out!

One of the funniest things our trainer said yesterday, “Friends don’t let friends miss leg day.”  And, this is so true.  My running coach Mary said the same thing, she thinks training helps with the running which is my ultimate goal.  We did planks yesterday and I still can’t check that 60 second plank off the Fitkist fitness bucket list.  I am sore today but not in pain.  Bring on Thursday!

Leg Day

I told him I would steal it and I have

Finally, we only have one week until Valentine’s Day!  I love love.  What can I say?  My goal this week is to work on doing a couple of these exercises below daily in order to maintain my current strength training and keep up with the cardio (and of course kick some lbs to the curb).  These are all moves I am familiar with so I am not worried about doing them.  Obviously, if you are going to try any of these please do so at your own risk, speed, weight, etc. I am just posting these to help remind me what my choices are and maybe give you a little inspiration.  To me the jumping jacks are the worst.  They are like in jelly shoes in that you remember you loved them in your childhood but now realize how horrible they are.  My favorite are standing side crunches – Turbo-jam style.  If you do them right you’ll feel it tomorrow.

Valentine's Day

I must say that we are having an unconventional Valentine’s date that will not require a dress.  We are going to a hockey game so I will be wearing jeans but its still nice to fit in the skinny ones when needed!

Good news is that I lost four pounds too.  Every little bit helps.

What is your favorite and least favorite to do from the You Pick ’em list?

Things I Have Learned This Week

It has been a hectic week to be certain.  I did not get to make a wonderfully thought out, intuitive and informative post as usual.  Ridiculous I know.  But, I have had so much to do, plan and think about my mind is fried.

When I look down at my list of “to-dos” that I make every Monday morning without fail, I see that I am still way behind.  I think that I have made a little progress nonetheless.  Here goes:

Living Without Artificial Sugar Sucks

Paula over at Eat: Watch: Run is on a kick where she is not consuming it for one month.  She should definitely get a crown or something equally awesome because I tried it this week and I only made it to Friday.  It’s the coffee man.  I need it!!! So, I tried something new today.  I tried Nectresse today and it was pretty good!  More granular than Splenda and it claims to be 100% natural.

But, this definitely does not keep in line with Paula’s idea of getting away from the artificial stuff.  Her reasons include: “artificial sweetener leaches calcium from your bones and depletes minerals in your body, it makes you crave more sugar, it makes your glycemic index go way up.”  Obviously, clean eating is the best option but guess I can’t do it.  Truth be told – being on a low carb diet requires me to get a little sweetness from the artificial beasts.

Nectresse

Made from: Erythritol, Sugar, Monk Fruit, Molasses and its calorie free.

Men Definitely Workout Differently Than Women

Rob and I went to workout together with a trainer this week.  We are trying to get in some good shape for the big engagement party.  I was excited and nervous.   Excited because I love having a trainer, they are motivating, smart and very encouraging.  Also, they make it impossible for you to deny how fat and out of shape you are.

I was nervous because the trainer was a guy (my first ever) and he is my cousin’s boyfriend.  I can guarantee everyone in my family knows how chubby I am now.  Not, that I care – they obviously can see me.  🙂  But, what I learned is that men look at training differently because they focus on bulking up and gaining major muscle mass through heavy lifting.  The only bulking up I want to do is in my wallet and the heavy lifting is for shopping bags only.    Yes, these are counter-productive goals but that is my life in a nutshell.

Oh yeah boys smell gross when working out.  Yuck.

Men Women

Why yes, Rob and I look just like this when working out. Thank you for asking.

Losing Weight Is Hard

Drumroll –  I lost 1.2 pounds in January.  Boo!! I am about 8.8 short of my goals. I want to lose between 12-10 lbs per month.  I am back on track this month.  I promise to report back March 1!

Senioritis Is Real

I am counting down the days until school is complete.  I am not sure why the program requires the most labor intensive classes at the end.  But, at this point who cares.   Three good months and I will on my way to getting that FSU Alumni license plate cover I have dreamed about since 2000.  I have about 100+ pages to read about IT and Insurance.  Can you believe that I don’t want to do this?  I didn’t think so.

Senioritis

I Love Pinterest

Pinterest

I have a great love affair with Pinterest and I am sharing it with you now.  I made my Mom sign up too because I know she will be a great pinner.   My biggest problem with Pinterest is that I pin too many treats and don’t attempt all the dang workouts I pin.  If you want to follow me, you should probably do it,  I like my pins.  Here are my most popular pins this week:

PicMonkey Collage

Ok, truth be told the flip-flops from Express and that ring are not pins.  Both should be though, the flops are wedding white and that is my new “workout ring.”  My workout ring is what I wear when I am doing things, like working out, that might damage my actual ring.  It is similar to mine but about 3 carats bigger.  🙂

What did you learn this week?

Also, no one has claimed that Glow Run medal yet.   If you want to try a virtual 5K of your own you should do it.  I will mail it to you (US only please).

Winning – Training – Engaging

WINNING

No, I am NOT Charlie Sheen.  I actually won a free entry into a 5K off of Active.com.  I have been trying for years and I finally won!  I won an entry to race in the  Wrucha’s 5K Run at Gasden Park.  The value was $30 and I was so excited.  The bad part it was on a Sunday morning in South, South, South Tampa.

Rob and I had to attend a church meeting that day so I knew I would not have time to drive to the race, go home and change and make it on time.  So, I decided to post the bib up on Run Tampa and it was gone in an instant.  Ever better it went to someone who is awesome and beautiful and a Run Tampa member and I did not even know it!  Her name is also Melissa – which is cool!!  Melissa was part of my Color Run team because she is friends with my friend Brandi.  Small world…

She made it to the race and finished and looked great doing it.  I looked for her time but it was not posted.  Maybe she will share with us… (hint, hint)  She also ran in a Jack Daniels hat which further increases my fondness for her.

MM Rocked It

Congrats on your Race!

TRAINING

I have finally started training with my new training plan!  This week I have been focusing on getting back into the groove.  Zumba and running and walking oh my!  I have been adding more veggies daily and have also been focusing on trying to get more sleep.  I usually stay up late doing homework  or reading and then fall asleep with a book on my face.  I need my ZZZZs.

Another thing I have been doing is putting lemons in my water.  After doing a little Pinterest research I am finding that lemon water is great for weight loss.  Pinterest is a reliable source right? Well either way here the stuff I have learned..

Lemons, specifically lemon juice,  is good for digestion, boosting your immune system through Vitamin C, possibly anticarcinogenic, high in potassium, antibacterial (which I am all about), antiseptic, and the list goes on!

Picture2

It’s refreshing and its supposed to be very good for your liver.  It has detoxifying properties which I really need!  I found this “outfit” on Polyvore – cracks me up every time.Liver Hater

I plan to keep you posted on weight loss and the training as it comes along.  I am headed to Gasparilla for the 15K in late February so I am super nervous: my goals are to finish and beat my half pace of 16:36.  Both of which Mary is helping me do with the excellent training plan.  If you don’t know Mary find her inspirational, awesomeness here.

ENGAGING

Lastly Rob and I are working on a playlist for the DJ at the engagement party and it is tougher than you think.  I was trying to pick songs that are lovey dovey, familiar and fun. The list below is what I am starting with but editing is guaranteed.  The are in no particular order either.

No haters please but I certainly welcome your input!  If I am missing something please tell me and if you hate one keep that to yourself.  We have an eclectic family so we have to play all kinds of music.  I really need some new ones for the Island portion. I also think I will use the “Fun/Dance” songs for my next run playlist.  Without further ado…

You Glow Girl! (Free Medal Giveaway)

Hello Fitkist Peeps!

I hope you all are having a productive week!  I know I am not.  School started this week and is already tearing at my soul (mantra: four more months, four more months).

But I did have a super, fabulous weekend!  We finally got to do the Glow Run.  It was awesome!  For those of you who don’t know the Glow Run is a night-time 5K that encourages glow sticks, flashing lights, and black light fun.  There are three chances to go through “black light fun zones” where you can stop and play around, dance to the rave music and snap a few photos.

Glow Run Sign
I went with Rob and my friend Shannon, who by the way I am SO proud of.  She has lost about 30 pounds and has participated in a three 5Ks in the last four months.  To me that is so inspirational and exciting.  I am really excited for her new “racing” hobby.   Although, in case you are reading this Shannon, you better not get faster than me!

three amigos

Overall, the race was really put together well.  Packet, shirt and glow stick pick up was really easy.  The race started on time too which is really great because of my corral anxiety.  But, everyone was in a great mood it was just so much fun.  The more I do them the more I enjoy these non-competitive races because there is no pressure.   It’s just fun and relaxing!  We spent about twenty minutes breaking and connecting glow sticks and glow glasses.  I actually broke one and my shirt turned a little glow-y for a while.

My Glow Love

The starting line was away from registration and when we lined up we were in the second wave.  This a my view from the corral.

start

The course wound through downtown St. Petersburg and despite it being January it was pretty hot out.  The glow zones were fun because the black light makes you look like Violet from Willy Wonka.

Photo bomb

I wonder if J-Lo will rock my sweaty blueberry look at the Oscars??

We walked the course so we were rounding up the tail of the race.  I don’t think I have ever been last at a race but I’m only waiting for that day.  When we finished they had great places to take pictures, medals, beer and Nutri-Grain bars waiting for us. Of course in keeping with the spirit I opted for the Blueberry option.

Photo Finish

At the end of the race there is a big 21 and up party where you can get free beer (all you can eat Nutri-Grain bars) and dance the night away in a glowing festival.  We opted not to stay for the party for two reasons – we are old and we were starving.  Since we decided to stay down there we went back to the hotel to get food and change and then we hit the town.   During our night out we saw tons of Glow Run people running around in tutus, crazy socks and wacky outfits.  I think someone had too much fun because they lost their medal and the bartender Brandi was talking to gave it to her!  Well, she gave it to me and now I am going to give it to one of you.

MEDAL GIVEAWAY CONTEST!

If you are interested in running your own Glow Run (your own safe path, your steam, your time, your liability) write a comment below.  Make the commitment to try a ‘virtual’ 5K!  After you run post the date you ran/walked on my Fitkist facebook page.  At the end of February I will randomly select from the racers to get the medal. Get extra entries by posting a photo and commenting on Twitter (#fitkist).

For those of you interested but without social media you can email me your entry too.  Glow Baby Glow!

Have you ever run the Glow Run?  If not, are you interested now? 🙂

I Am A Virtual Runner Now

So, I managed to take six minutes out of my day and come up with my January 2013 workout schedule.  I am already behind in it but I think I need to share it with the world anyway.  It should help me meet my goals and catch up on my running skills which have been thrown by the wayside in my over-celebration of Jesus’ Birthday.  I definitely am a victim of FSS.  I did not workout like I should and I definitely did not run like I should have.  I am most looking forward to Yoga/Fun Cardio Sundays and getting back to strength training! Zumba started on Monday so I am back to that fun-diversión as well.

January 2013

My only race over the break was on December 22nd.  I participated in a Hooters Race “The Mayans Were Wrong 5K.” It was supposed to be a celebration on the beach because the world did not end.

However, the actual race on  Clearwater Beach was sold out.  So, I decided to become a virtual runner.  For those who don’t know, a virtual runner is one who runs the race on their own honor.  You make the course and vow to complete the 3.1 (or whatever distance) on your own.  You time yourself and you run the distance solo. It is a great opportunity to be a part of the race community, accomplish goals and earn medals/kudos from races you normally would not be able to do because of travel and time constraints.  It really is neat because you can do it whenever you have time!  Which to me means you don’t have to wake up before dawn, drive and wait in the cold to be a road race runner!

Virtual registrants of this race received a bib, sweatshirt (which is terribly ugly but I love) and finisher’s medal.  So, we got quite a lot of swag!   Honestly, a lot more than some races.  The cost for the virtual race was $35.

My Bib

They mailed my bib in advance of race day.  Technically, you can run the race whenever but I ran it on race day about the same time the race started on the beach.  I wore my bib and ran the 3.1 through my neighborhood.  I felt a little stupid wearing the bib but I did it.  I had a picture but Rob had it on his old phone so its gonzo.  😦

FinisherMy time was 49:25.  Which sucks but at least I did it!

Medal

My new jewelry has gone to live with his brothers and sisters

Race coordinators mailed the sweatshirt and medal after the race in January.  I love the medal because it is dated and it has a bottle opener on it!  Sweet no?

I thought it was a great experience and I would definitely partake in another one.  The only downside I see is that you miss out on the runner’s high that the starting line corral gives you.  Also, you miss out on the post race party which to me is half the fun!  I did eat a post race banana though.

Have you ever participated in a Virtual Race that you actually paid for? If not, would you?

I will be back next Monday to recap the Glow Run!   TTYL

Refresh and Renew + Exciting News

Sorry for my absence, unlike many of my other blogger friends the Christmas holiday is a time when I take a break from my computer and relax.  I hope you missed me.

And although, we are only seven days into 2013, I already feel behind as I have not posted my New Year’s Resolutions for 2013.  I think its important to keep myself accountable.   So, I am going to do it.  Better late than never right?

NewYearsResolutionResize-300x219

Wikipedia defines it this way: A New Year’s resolution is a commitment that a person makes to one or more personal goals, projects, or the reforming of a habit.  The most important part of this is the word commitment.  We really need to commit to making a change if we are going to form it into a habit.   Truth be told I only achieved 29% of my resolutions from 2012.  So, I know I will have to really try to get closer to achieving them all in 2013. But, instead of resolutions I like to call them goals.  They are in no particular order and not all of them involve fitness.

My 2013 Goals:

  1. Lose Weight – This is so I can get healthy and run faster.  I will be documenting this extensively on the blog this year.
  2. Pay Down Some Debt and Save Money– This is so I can save for the future – who knows what each day will bring.
  3. Attend Church More – To get closer to God and be more humble and more thankful.
  4. Log 600 Miles!! – I only got to 324 last year so it is going to take a lot of effort to nearly double that number.
  5. Achieve a new 5K PR – Currently it stands at 41:31, which is pretty crappy for my age group.
  6. Run a 10K or 15K – I am considering Gasparilla but we shall see how this month goes.
  7. Read one book a week. My new Kindle should aid in this one.
  8. Graduate from FSU!  (May 2013 here I come!)
  9. Volunteer for 16 hours.  I hope to do this by becoming involved in the Women’s Council at my church.  I think it is the right thing to do to give back to the community.  I also want to volunteer for one race to help pass out water or medals or anything.  Races can never happen without volunteers!
  10. Visit the Rays in a new stadium!  Maybe Miami or Atlanta or LA!

**THE EXCITING NEWS**

On Christmas day, I am excited to tell you that Rob proposed to me!  We are getting married!  He hung the ring in the tree and wrote a cute poem and everything.   It was very sweet.   This makes all my goals for 2013 all the more important.  I must succeed so I can wear the most perfect dress for me!

Fat Santa Syndrome

Are you ready for Christmas??  I’m not and I have not been my usual Fitkist self.  I missed Zumba, I skipped walking and I have not been running.  Needless to say the damn marbles will not budge from one jar to the other.  I don’t feel too bad since Rob is using his marble jars as paperweights.

But, since there are just about 10 days left of 2012 I am not going to beat myself up or be too disappointed.  My goal for the next ten days is to keep it together, workout as possible and eat smarter not harder.

Milk and Cookies with Note Reading

For Santa, Not Melissa

Like you, I have been bombarded with holiday invites: parties, dinners, drinks, coffees.  Everyone is bringing candy, cookies or wine to my house and leaving it there. They are trying to be nice, jerks.  Unfortunately, none of those items are on the fitkist meal plan.  But, I know that I can make it through the next couple of weeks if follow a few tips to avoid what I like to call “Fat Santa Syndrome.”  Anyone who has struggled with their weight knows what this is.  You feel fat and you think “whatever, I am already feeling/looking fat I will just eat and drink everything in sight because it won’t matter.”  OH YES IT DOES!

Gaining ten additional pounds is going to make any weight loss goal that much harder and your skinny jeans that much tighter.  Don’t do it man!

So, in an effort to avoid this I am going to be overly conscious of this syndrome.  Ideally, I would like to have a shirt made but I am too lazy and too broke now.

HOW TO AVOID FAT SANTA SYNDROME

1.  Drink Up!  …water that is.  Water is what I want my body to be made of and FULL of.  As, a result my goal is to drink ten ounces of water before each meal.  It’s not only hydrating and filling it really helps my digestion and skin (which are added benefits).

2. Eat Special! …I am going to only eat foods that I know I will not be able to get readily in the next few months.  For example, I am not going to eat chocolate chip cookies (pictured deliciously above) – since those have a year-round availability.   But, my Mom rarely makes her delicious stuffing so I’m going for that instead.  I also plan to be aware of the portions and my fullness levels.   Two things that I think really affect overeating.

3. Work It Out!  I know that I won’t be able to workout every day but I can certainly do it every other day.  As a result, I am ONLY allowing 24 free hours workout free.  After that a mandatory sweat session is in order.  20 minutes is better than NO minutes! If I can do it you can do it.

FAT SANTA

What do you think about these tips?  What is your plan to avoid weight gain over the holidays?

I am running my first virtual race tomorrow so wish me luck.  It is the Hooters 5K Kiss Mayan Ass!  Hopefully, the world will be here tomorrow so I can do it.

Have you ever run one of these?  I will post a race recap soon and let you know how it goes.
